About wulao.si

A quiet multilingual Heart Sutra reader, with named editions, text sources and reuse terms.

What can I read here?

Read complete editions of the Heart Sutra without signing in. Chinese pages include character-by-character Mandarin pinyin. Reading pages support adjustable type and light or dark appearance. The text remains available without JavaScript.

Why do the editions differ?

The Chinese text follows Xuanzang’s short recension, Taishō T08, no. 251, with 260 Chinese characters. Japanese is a traditional Chinese-character chanting text. Korean and Vietnamese present traditional phonetic readings of the Chinese text, rather than modern vernacular translations. Sanskrit is presented in IAST romanization. The Tibetan and Lotsawa House translations follow the long recension, including an opening narrative and conclusion. The Thai page presents Astro Neemo’s 2009 interpretive translation, republished under the author’s express permission with the required statement that it reflects the translator’s understanding and may contain errors. It is not presented as a standard monastic edition. Different traditions are identified rather than forced into a sentence-by-sentence equivalence.

How are texts selected?

We publish texts only after identifying their source and reuse conditions. Every reading page gives its edition, credits and source links. Languages without a confirmed reusable text are not published as reading pages. wulao.si is an independent reading site and is not affiliated with the cited institutions.

What does pinyin provide?

Pinyin is a Mandarin reading aid for Chinese characters; it does not prescribe the pronunciation of Sanskrit mantras or replace a tradition’s chanting practice.

May I reuse these texts?

Ancient texts and modern translations have different reuse conditions. The Lotsawa House translations and Tibetan electronic text used here are licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0. Attribution is required and commercial reuse is excluded. The Thai text uses the translator’s express permission to republish, not a Creative Commons license or a public-domain designation. Consult the license on each reading page and its original source. This site is not a collection of unrestricted commercial-use translations.
